Being Aware and Taking Care: Helping Those Who Are Failing to Thrive

“One of her lambs isn’t doing well.”

Kyler has always loved animals and being able to work on the farm at her high school was a dream come true. She loved every bit of the muck and mud and blood of taking care of the animals. One Saturday morning when she arrived to feed, she found one of the ewes had delivered two lambs. But one of the lambs was huddled in the corner with labored breathing. He struggled even to lift his head.

He was failing to thrive.

Kyler called her advisor. The advisor was on her way. Then Kyler called me, her mom.

“The ewe had her lambs but one of her lambs isn’t doing well.” I could hear in her voice she was trying to be brave but there was a thread of anxiousness in her tone. I told Kyler to settle the baby in her lap under the heat lamp and I’d be right there.

The above image was the scene when I arrived.

I watched Kyler hold the small newborn lamb in her lap, gently stroking his back. She’d lean down and give him little kisses on the head. She loved that little guy in the best way she knew. And over half an hour, that struggling little newborn lamb

…stabilized his breathing

…lifted his head

…started to bleet

…shifted in Kyler’s lap

And finally wobbled over to his mama to nurse.

Just in time for the advisor to get there. (Insert wink)

I believe if Kyler had not been there, there would have been a different outcome.

Am I so busy Busy BUSY that I don’t see those around me failing to thrive? I’ve been so very guilty of this.

God is the only perfect comforter but I can be His hands and feet. I can be someone who can be aware and take care of God's lambs.

Maybe we can all help each other thrive.

Psalm 23 NIV

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,He leads me beside quiet waters,

He refreshes my soul.He guides me along the right paths    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
