July 12
We love camping.
Not RVs or trailers or 5th Wheels or Glamping. I’m talking tent camping. That’s what we did growing up. We’d spend time as a family up in the Sierra Nevadas camping for a couple weeks. Days filled with exploring and creek splashing and wood cutting and evenings around the light of a camp fire.
Did you know something else likes the light of a camp fire too?
The summer before my 7th grade year I found that out.
In the dwindling sunlight of early evening, I had gone inside the tent to get a sweat shirt and put one of my shiny gold barrettes to keep the bangs out of my face.
As my dad lit the camp fire for the evening, he said, “ You might not want to wear that shiny thing in your hair.”
“Why not?” I asked and in true teenaged angst form, didn’t actually listen to the answer.
Night falls. We sit around the camp fire. Smell of roasting marshmallows lifting thru the air. Fire light flickers off my shiny gold barrette. The sound of flapping wings in the tree tops above.
Wait. What? Sound of flapping wings in the tree tops above? Birds don’t fly at night. So what could be flying at night?
Bats.
At the moment I realized the sound was bat wings, the bat swooped down grabbed the shiny gold barrette and a good chunk of my hair. I screamed in equal measures of pain and horror and my dad just sat there calmly stirring the fire.
“I told you that you might not want to wear that shiny thing in your hair.”
So is there a biblical tie in, LaCinda?
I have one but I’m curious what YOU apply from the story?
Let’s brain storm in the comments.
33“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” Luke 11:33-37
